The route

From the Kreuzberg end of the canal the route runs via Maybachufer and Planufer to Urbanhafen, where the towpath offers a calm alternative to the carriageway. Between Hallesches Ufer and Potsdamer Brücke the character becomes more urban: this is where the sections on classified main roads lie, listed as a criterion on this page, together with a noticeable share of parallel parking in the riding zone.

The final section skirts the southern edge of the Tiergarten and ends at Zoologischer Garten. Fourteen sets of traffic lights over barely ten kilometres is a lot, but there is not a single main-road crossing without lights. For an inner-city link that is a good trade: it is slower, but without the points where you have to merge into cross traffic.

What you should know beforehand

The towpath at Maybachufer is busy with pedestrians on market days and is then not a through route. There is cobbled surface between Planufer and Urbanhafen.
