Along the Panke from Schönholz to Nordbahnhof

Nine and a half kilometres from northern Pankow to Bernauer Straße, most of it through green corridors rather than on the carriageway. For many people it replaces the ride down Schönhauser Allee and is the obvious commuting link from the north-east into the centre.

The route

The route starts at Schönholz S-Bahn station and joins the Panke green corridor immediately. As far as Bürgerpark Pankow you ride on gravel and asphalt away from the roads; after that, short sections on 30 km/h side streets alternate with further green stretches. Around 72 per cent of the length is physically separated from motor traffic, and 45 per cent runs through parkland and riverside.

The most awkward point is the crossing of Wollankstraße and the transition into Gesundbrunnen: this is where the one main-road crossing without traffic lights lies, listed as a criterion on this page. From Mauerpark onwards the route follows separated infrastructure along Bernauer Straße to Nordbahnhof. Six sets of traffic lights over nine and a half kilometres means the ride does not flow uninterrupted, but it is not constantly stopped either.

What you should know beforehand

The green corridor is largely unlit; in winter the variant via the side streets is the more practical one. After prolonged rain the gravel surface between Schönholz and Bürgerpark is soft.
