Along the Teltowkanal from Steglitz to Neukölln

Almost thirteen kilometres by the water right across the south, 86 per cent of it separated from motor traffic and without a single main-road crossing lacking traffic lights. The route links three districts and is the quietest east-west connection south of the Ringbahn.

The route

From Rathaus Steglitz you reach the Teltowkanal after a few hundred metres and then stay on the bank almost the whole way. The towpath alternates between asphalt and gravel, is wide enough to ride two abreast, and is interrupted at only five points by bridges and cross streets — each with traffic lights or an underpass.

From Tempelhofer Hafen onwards it becomes more urban: the path follows the Britzer Zweigkanal, passes under the motorway bridge and ends at the Neukölln harbour on Sonnenallee. The 86 per cent of separated infrastructure is why this route also works with a trailer; what is missing is continuous lighting. Anyone riding after dark should know the stretches between Lankwitz and Attilastraße.

What you should know beforehand

Between Südende and Lankwitz the towpath is narrow in places when people are walking. The section along the Britzer Zweigkanal is occasionally muddy after high water.
