On the grounds of the ufaFabrik in Berlin-Tempelhof around 4,000 square metres of roof are planted with grasses, herbs and perennials; the substrate of soil and expanded clay or shale is about ten centimetres deep. The roofs filter rainfall, return roughly three quarters of it to the air through evaporation according to the association, and bind some two tonnes of dust a year. The vegetation has been studied scientifically since the 1990s; depending on the roof, 40 to 50 plant species are counted, considerably more than on a typical Berlin green roof. Green façades complement the roofs and cool the buildings and the site in summer. The grounds, with a theatre, café, guesthouse and garden, are open to visitors; guided tours on ecological topics are available by prior arrangement.
