Discovering nature in the city
There is nature in the city, too – and there are places that help you track it down. In the “Nature and environmental learning” category, hauptstadt.net collects places where children can explore for themselves.
What counts as environmental learning here
A beautiful park alone is not enough. A place is only included in this category if it has a specific hands-on activity, such as a guided walk, a research station or a programme for children and families. Green surroundings alone do not make an environmental learning activity – a playground in a park, for example, belongs under “Play and explore”.
Where to look
- The Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Action and the Environment describes a network of environmental education centres that helps people track down nature in the city. According to the Senate Department, all events are listed and kept up to date in the environmental calendar, found on the website of the state-owned Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin (Berlin Nature Conservation Foundation).
- According to the Berliner Forsten (Berlin’s forestry service), environmental education and forest education are key parts of its work. It lists nine Berlin forest schools and a teaching centre.
Depending on the season
Many nature activities take place outdoors, and the weather changes with the seasons. It is best to check with the provider beforehand what to bring; sturdy shoes, clothes that can get dirty and something to drink are often useful. Whether an activity goes ahead in bad weather is up to the organiser.
Checking this information is not a safety certification.
