Rainy days on a small budget

It is raining, money is tight, and the children still want to get out and do something. To find what you need quickly, it helps to know exactly what the “Rainy day” and “Free” filters mean on hauptstadt.net.

How the filters work

  • Rainy day only shows activities that can be done fully indoors. A place that is partly indoors and partly outdoors only counts if an indoor alternative is documented.
  • Free only appears where there are no required costs – including for an accompanying adult, if one has to come along.
  • If the price is not known, an activity never counts as free. In that case, check the organiser’s website.

Libraries for rainy days

Public libraries are an obvious choice for a rainy day. According to the Berlin public library network (VÖBB), it includes more than 80 libraries across the city. The Tempelhof-Schöneberg public library states that library cards for children and teenagers are free. You can visit its branches without a card; to borrow items or use the digital services, you need a valid card.

Staatliche Museen zu Berlin: free admission for children and young people

The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Berlin State Museums) give free admission to children and young people up to their 18th birthday on presentation of proof. Whether you need a ticket as the accompanying adult is shown in each museum’s prices. On hauptstadt.net, a visit like this only counts as free if the accompanying adult’s costs are also documented as zero.

Checking this information is not a safety certification.
